Provincial net zero emission: From global crisis to Local sustainability
Net Zero Emission (NZE) is crucial for addressing climate change, aiming to balance greenhouse gas emissions and removals. Thailand targets NZE by 2065, with a 30-40% reduction in emissions by 2030. Challenges include securing funding and implementing plans at provincial levels.
In 2023, Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO) supported provinces in assessing their emissions and setting 2030 reduction targets. In 2024, TGO initiated provincial NZE plans, focusing on twelve high-emission provinces.
The assessment shows NZE is achievable for five provinces through renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable practices. However, some provinces face challenges due to high population density, extensive industrial activity, and significant transportation infrastructure, with only limited forested areas, requiring additional technological support or regional GHG removal sharing.
This project demonstrates that local sustainability efforts can contribute significantly to addressing the global climate crisis, though some areas require more support and innovative solutions to meet national targets.
